150 years of St.Gallen Cantonal Hospital

The St.Gallen Cantonal Hospital is a permanent fixture in the Swiss hospital landscape.

The cantonal hospital once consisted of just four departments, but in recent decades the Cantonal Hospital of St.Gallen has developed into the largest and most important hospital in Eastern Switzerland and has achieved a level of medical care on a university level. The Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen operates as a central hospital and is therefore a strong medical partner for the whole of Eastern Switzerland. It is also the first non-university hospital in Switzerland with its own research center, which carries out top-class international projects, publishes in the most important specialist journals and receives a considerable amount of third-party funding. According to the co-founder and head of the Medical Research Center, Prof. Dr. Burkhard Ludewig, the proximity between medical research and practice ensures a better quality of treatment - every day, around the clock.

Around 950 doctors and over 2,000 employees in the Department of Nursing and Therapeutic Services work at St.Gallen Cantonal Hospital. Together with the staff of the other (specialist) departments, they ensure comprehensive medical treatment and care for the population - every day, around the clock. Under the management of Stefan Lichtensteiger, the St.Gallen Cantonal Hospital treats 33,850 inpatients and records almost 552,107 outpatient visits every year.

St.Gallen Health congratulates the Cantonal Hospital of St.Gallen on its anniversary and looks forward to further collaboration and the milestones of the "come together" intergenerational building project. The demolition of the original hospital building, House 01, marks the end of one era and makes way for a new one. Here's to the next 150 years - happy birthday Kantonsspital St.Gallen!
