Internationally networked
The Center for Laboratory Medicine St.Gallen (ZLM) stands for "Diagnostic and clinical expertise from a single source". Joyce Richardson Etokwu, Senior Consultant Hematology, gives an insight into everyday working life.
What do you think makes the ZLM special?
The Center for Laboratory Medicine St.Gallen (ZLM) stands for "Diagnostic and clinical competence from a single source®". This guiding principle characterizes our day-to-day work and is actively practiced throughout the entire clinic. Close interdisciplinary cooperation within the team and with our clinical partners enables comprehensive, efficient and high-quality diagnostics.
As one of the ten leading medical diagnostic laboratories in Switzerland, ZLM is known for its innovative strength, flexibility and strong team spirit in all specialist areas. Our role as a pioneer in laboratory innovation is particularly noteworthy: whether in the introduction of new technologies, the digitalization of diagnostic processes or the development of pioneering concepts - we actively shape laboratory medicine and regularly set new standards.
What does international cooperation at ZLM look like?
International networking is a central component of our work. We regularly take part in international studies, round robin tests and specialist congresses - with scientific contributions, poster presentations or as co-organizers. Particularly noteworthy is the organization of the intensive haemostaseological workshop, which we hold together with renowned partners such as the Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis Research at an international level. This platform promotes interdisciplinary exchange between specialists from different countries - directly on site in Eastern Switzerland.
The ZLM is also involved in innovative research projects. For example, we are part of an international consortium working on a solution that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to make the consultation and diagnosis of rare genetic diseases more efficient. Various studies demonstrate the excellent and collaborative partnership between the ZLM and its national and international partners. One example of this is the SWIFT study, which was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Another outstanding sign of international recognition is the certification of the Eastern Switzerland Haemophilia and Haemostasis Center, which is run in cooperation with the Eastern Switzerland Children's Hospital, as a European Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre (EHCCC). This award confirms our diagnostic and clinical excellence in the field of coagulation medicine and underlines the successful collaboration with partners such as the Eastern Switzerland Children's Hospital and HOCH Health Eastern Switzerland.
All these activities show that we think and act beyond institutional and national boundaries - in the interests of advanced diagnostics and optimum care for patients of all ages.
Which tasks and projects are particularly important at ZLM?
The Centre for Laboratory Medicine (ZLM) fulfils a public service mandate for the HOCH (Health Ostschweiz) hospital network, the St.Gallen psychiatric department and the canton's veterinary authorities and provides both basic laboratory medical care and specialized diagnostics. We also provide services for independent practitioners, non-cantonal and private hospitals and universities.
As an accredited laboratory (STS 0155), we attach great importance to quality, reliability and continuous development. Our focus is on the introduction of innovative diagnostic methods, the automation and digitalization of processes and close coordination with clinical requirements.
The ZLM is also a recognized training center for FAMH and FVH candidates, haematology specialists and BMA and BMLD students. The targeted promotion of junior staff and the continuous further training of our employees are central elements of our mission - and ensure high-quality and future-oriented diagnostics in the long term.
What do you personally like best about your work at ZLM?
As a naturalized Swiss citizen with roots in West Africa (Nigeria), I am particularly grateful to be able to work in an environment that not only values diversity, but actively promotes it. At ZLM, I experience a collegial, respectful and multicultural working environment. I am both challenged and supported in my role - by the management, through exciting projects and through daily exchanges with committed colleagues. The opportunity to make a real contribution to healthcare motivates me every day.
