The Oberwaid - between tradition and modernity

In 1870, the naturopath and pharmacist Dr. Theodor Hahn opened the "Obere Waid" water and spa clinic. In 1930, under the management of the Baldegg Sisters, the establishment was given a dual focus - a spa with Kneipp treatments and a housekeeping school. Over the course of this time, the Oberwaid developed more and more into a health resort. It became a place of recovery after serious illnesses and operations - which it still is today. In May 2007, the Oberwaid was sold to Gabi and Heinrich Thorbecke. With the knowledge of the processes and the requirements for a modern and efficient infrastructure gained through their collaboration with the Baldegg sisters, they were able to plan the redesign of the Oberwaid together with the renowned architect Carlos Martinez. The Oberwaid was ceremoniously reopened on November 15, 2012. To this day, the Oberwaid combines superior comfort and state-of-the-art medicine. The Oberwaid offers a broad spectrum of medical expertise. The interdisciplinary range of treatments extends from diagnostics and therapy to rehabilitation and prevention in the fields of psychosomatics, cardiology and orthopaedics. Tailor-made treatment plans are drawn up with and for each patient by renowned specialists and implemented by a dedicated interdisciplinary team of specialist therapists. Surrounded by nature, discreetly and far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, patients can concentrate fully on their health and enjoy all the amenities of the highest standard. The Oberwaid has 136 rooms (approx. 2/3 clinic, 1/3 hotel and seminars). 211 employees look after the well-being of the guests.

The Oberwaid has a service mandate for both psychosomatic and cardiological rehabilitation. Both patients with general and supplementary insurance from all over Switzerland can be treated. As a contract hospital, musculoskeletal rehabilitation at the Oberwaid is open to patients with supplementary insurance. In addition to the teaching professions, the Oberwaid is also a recognized training centre for medical/academic courses. As an SIWF-certified training center, the Oberwaid offers residents in the field of psychiatry and psychotherapy the opportunity to complete a section of their specialist training in a professional and exciting environment. Municipal cooperation partners are the St.Gallen Cantonal Hospital, the Stephanshorn Clinic, the St.Gallen North Psychiatric Clinic and the OSST University of Applied Sciences. Various research projects are part of this cooperation.

The Oberwaid regularly organizes medical lectures and information events on topics from the fields of psychosomatics, cardiology, orthopaedics and modern prevention. Benefit from the specialist knowledge of top-class speakers. The presentations are followed by an opportunity for a professional exchange. The lectures are free of charge and take place in the seminar rooms of the Oberwaid.
